Become a better reader of Tibetan and engage more deeply with authentic Dharma teachings.

Although written a thousand years ago by Kadampa spiritual mentor Geshe Langri Thangpa, the 8 Verses remains a brilliant lojong teaching that speaks right to our hearts in these challenging times.

This a teaching that is still enthusiastically embraced by all lineages of Tibetan Buddhism. It has been taught by the 14th Dalai Lama, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, and most recently by Anam Thubten Rinpoche.

Our workbook also has additional 4-line verses from various texts having to do with compassionate development of bodhicitta (the Heart of Awakening): a prayer from the Green Tara Sadhana, a verse from chapter 9 of Shantideva’s Engaging in the Conduct of the Bodhisattva, and a prayer from the Chenrezig Sadhana.

By working with actual Tibetan Buddhist texts, beginning readers have the opportunity to practice spelling and reading out loud, as well as to review the grammar and vocabulary they have studied in grammar courses.

This is an excellent supplement to the student who has completed the Level II Workbook. This is a famous Buddhist text, often taught by many Rinpoches and lamas. It not only helps the student to better understand Classical Tibetan grammar and vocabulary, but it is also Dharma-rich: The essence of Langri Thangpa’s teaching was byang chub sems, Bodhicitta, the Heart of Awakening. The teachings in the 8 Verses are a way to practice the lojong worldview–to make it real–and therefore transformative in one’s life.

His impact on Tibetan Buddhism was far-reaching: he had disciples who were seminal masters in the Kagyu, Dakpo, and Shangpa Kagyu lineages.

“Since one person cannot fathom the measure of another, do not denigrate anyone.”–Langri Thangpa
